Module 3 Cut Animation

I have not yet started this module yet, with me starting late in January, by deadline isn't till June. However I have put it research and have an idea on what I'm going to plan on doing.

I have given myself 2 weeks to get this module done starting by Monday 6th May. My first week is mainly going to be researching more into the module and getting the development started so that I know exactly what my idea is going to be. My last week will be pre-production, where I will do it on cinema 4dD and get it put altogether. will then render it and take notes on my strengths and weaknesses of the module and how I will improve.

Traditional cut-outs come from the stop motion animation family. It is one of the easiest and fastest techniques to make, as you don't need to colour and draw each frame to scratch. However with technology growing some cut ours are now done on software such as cinema 4d. Computer cut outs have an advantage of being able to go back and forth on the timeline and work with keyframes in the pose to pose method. The technique has many variations and forms. The tradition technique is when the animator moves the pieces of paper cutouts under a fixed camera then shoots it straight ahead frame by frame as they come.

One of the most famous cut out animations is South Park. They are cut out boards put into 3D, which would be very challenging for people to do. These days, animation is mainly done on the PC in order to make everything look smoother and prettier. But South Park creators put a lot of effort in making it look hand made, without the splines, curves and 3D. The computer allows them to make an episode a week, thats all there is to it. They did there own thing, and stuck to it.

Another animation I found is “Your Face” created by Bill Plympton. In his animations he uses basic styles such as using coloured pencil drawings on paper. He did this to show his outrageous transitions that what build his quirky animations. He only draws four to six drawings per second which is a lot less that what Disney would do for example as they normally would require to do 12 to 24 drawings per second. The layout is shown as a cut-out were he drawings many drawings and puts them together to create a moving image for a film or animation.

The techniques Plympton used for “Your Face” were cut outs and cel animation to show the bizarre drawings of the face morphing into unusual shapes such as mouths rotating and moving across the face while he sing and his head twisting and turning it many more heads of himself. In each animation he wants to tell a story and his techniques are different to what a normal animator would do but he brings out humor to this. He spends many hours of the day constructing drawings to create the short film. The processes of it all are constant drawings and colouring in and making sure the composition of the character is perfectly aligned correctly.

First, my plan for doing  my cut out is that I'm going to take photos outside of little mud piles, trees, buildings etc and use them to put onto cinema 4d to create a cutout effect, as if it was done hand drawn. I want to try and create something basic for now as I am limited to time, but doing the idea from my previous module in E4 Esting, the evolution idea of the man going to the moon. I think this would work really effective and hopefully will work well. I'm going to research more into it and look online for tutorials to help me a long the way. I hope I will learn new skills and even do a practise cut out hand drawn to see the difference of whats its like to do it on software and on paper.

I have already given myself the timing I'll be doing this as told above and will be back on my blog to reflective on what I have done and what influenced me to do what I did. I will evau;ate my work and show a personal development plan of my weekly aims and objectives. Until then, for now I will research more into cut out animation and prepare for next week.

Future Opportunities

From doing the Esting competition, I want to entry in so many more so I can build up my portfolio and learn new skills and techniques. The specific competitions I would like to enter are:

The reason I would like to do this in the future is so I learn more about animating a movie. In the future I want to be able to go into the filming industry and do 3D modelling. By doing these competition it will push me towards my goals and help me get better so I have more of a chance.

These type of competitions, where they ask people to create a small, even if its a couple of minutes long will help on progression and the ability to reflect on the development that been done. To always look back and see the improvements that have been made and the mistakes. When doing the Esting, I know I made a lot of mistakes to begin with but i got better and learned new ways of how to do 3D animation. I learn from my mistakes and I think if i did more competitions I would get better and improve all the time.

There are all kinds of festivals that happen, that I never heard of till I seen the website below. I will end up going to these as it may help me improve on my portfolio and learn new skills. Also it may be an opportunity for a placement if people like my work. ve never been to a festival about animation or filming industry and by looking at what these festivals over to young animators I think will really help me grow to something better.

In the summer I'm planning on goin to have a look at see what the festivals have to offer. I'll hopefully get help and advice and see other young animators just like me and compare work and get feedback off one another. By looking at these festivals it has completely changed my whole idea of just going online and researching. Why not actually go out there and do it..and thats what i'm going to do.

Module 4 3D Animation Modelling

Progression and Time Management

Time Plan:

I created a timetable of how long it would take for me to do the drawing of the character and putting it on cinema 4d to animate. I gave myself 4 weeks at most and at least 3-4 hours a day to create the assets, artwork, animation, editing, and stylising. I believe this worked efficiently as when I prepared my timetable I made sure I followed it every day and stuck to it. It has been difficult to manage my time efficiently with the other prior modules I have to catch up with but having a time plan has really worked out well.

Document Daily/Weekly Progress:

I felt like I was behind schedule at first as the drawings were taking a while to do, with all the constant tracing and having to keep doing drafts of the storyboard to make sure the idea works.  However I still managed to complete my storyboard on time so I was always on target but I think in my second year I won’t find this as a problem as I won’t have to catch up on any prior modules. Any lost time I felt I had was because of the amount of concepts I was drawing, however once this was done, it was matter of colouring in the storyboards which didn’t take too long.

Uploaded Images and Video

This is my character in motion, unfortunately I couldn't loop it when downloaded onto youtube, but hopefully you get the idea.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Throughout the module I have had many errors, some I overcame but others I didn’t. I feel these errors have taught me more about cinema 4d and how complex it is when creating a character. The main errors I came across were when rigging the character. Even though I had a guide to help me, it was still very difficult to follow instructions therefore I made a few mistakes on the way.

My weight tool simple wasn’t working and made my characters body look out of place. This was simply resolved by moving the body tag in my object manager to a different location. Once this was done my weight tooling began to work as I was able to finally bind all my objects together. I have realised the hierarchy system is very important as when objects/tags are in the wrong places the software can’t handle it.

The threats I had when trying to animate the character, I wasn’t able to animate the head due to the head flipping to the side even though I’ve set it different. After trying over to fix it, I thought it would be best not to animate it to stop any problems from occurring and focus on other important matters of the module. In the future I will look more into this and hopefully will be able to resolve the problem.
Even though I’ve had many errors, I still created a successful animation. My mistakes taught me more about cinema 4d and I will remember them for the future and take them on board for my next 3d animation.

Progression

My progression though this has been very successful. I was able to follow all the requirements and get everything completed on time. It was very difficult as with me starting late in the course I had a lot of work that needed to be caught up on but I'm very happy with my overall work. I feel I have achieved my goals and aims and done a successful job in building a 3D character in cinema 4d and animated it to move.

Apply Numeracy to achieve a final outcome

Before I began on creating my 3D model, I practised on basic shapes etc. I tried to build a foot which in the end, ended up a little too flat but was good practise. I had an image on my front view and creating points to join them together to create a 3d model. I had to extrude the foot up as I was creating a new polygon shape each time. I tried to bend the leg at one point to make it look like it had a knee.

I built half the body as to make it easier I used symmetry so that I wouldn’t need to do the other half. To do this I had to but the body object into the symmetry tag then, the other half of the body appeared. While making a body, I had to practise with welding it together. To do this I joined the 2 symmetry’s together to make it a whole body, and then joint the points by right clicking and selecting weld. To edit the shape of my body I have to extrude to in its most basic form.

To begin with I was practising on creating a 3d head and wanted to make the head look exactly like my drawing. It turned out to be too difficult and time-consuming so in the end I used basic shapes to create my head for my character. It was however good practise and I learnt how to dot the points up by using the point tool to create polygons.

Personal Development Plan

The objectives for week 1 are to make sure my idea is in place and know what I want to do to the character, what type of movement it will do extra. Week 2 I will work on the development of of my project and draw out my character.Week 3 will be creating a 3D character in cinema 4d and make sure it looks how I've drawn it. I also create the bone structure so I can animate it. Week 4 I will animate the character so I can make it move.

Inspirational Work

To help me create my 3d model in cinema 4D, I thought using a technique such as Claymation would be a good way to start. Claymation is a traditional technique which is a model created that can be moved by a frame to create an animation. By moving the model it was easier to see how I wanted to animate this character. This is the first time I’ve ever done this so it was difficult, and I didn’t manage to get my tools on time so I had to use my hands, but I think it’s a good start to practising. It is a time consuming process and moving parts can be tricky but it’s a good way to show a 3D effect.

Reflection and Evaluation

Overall I found the project manageable but hard as I have other modules to do as well as this one but I felt that I have managed my time appropriately and therefore got the work done on schedule. I’ve had a lot more pressure with having more modules to do by I think having the pressure has helped me to do better and made me prepared if I get that amount of work all at one time.

I believe I did achieve my overall aims and objectives as I was set out to do as much hard work as possible. I put a lot of effort into my research so my end project would look as good as it could. My main aim was to make sure my character did was fully animated and made sure its bone structure was in the right place so it could move its legs and arms and I know by looking at the video I succeeded  My animation was fit for purpose as I did exactly what the assignment told me to do and made my character do animated on cinema 4D.

Module 6 E4 Esting

Progression and Time Management

Time Plan:

I created a timetable of how long it would take for me to do my e4 E-sting. I gave myself 3 weeks at most and at least 3-4 hours a day to create the assets, artwork, animation, editing, and stylising. I believe this worked efficiently as when I prepared my timetable I made sure I followed it every day and stuck to it. It has been difficult to manage my time efficiently with the other prior modules I have to catch up with but having a time plan has really worked out well.

Document Daily/Weekly Progress:

It went very well and I enjoyed doing it so much that I did my project within a day, so I was all finished within day. The only task I need to do is to complete my write up and making sure my e4 esting was rigged on cinema 4d. My progress for this module worked out very well and because I did it in such quick time, I had more time to look into my other modules that I’ve been  a little more behind it. Therefore everything worked out well.

Uploaded Video

This is the E4 animation I have created for the esting competition  I'm very proud of it as it took a lot of work and effort to get it finished but I believe it shows exactly what the clients wants and ticks of the requirements.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Initially, I had an idea that I would have broken by three hidden balls to make it look more effective. But this however wasn’t working, I assigned all the right components onto goal and pole within cinema 4d but it simple wasn’t working. It turned out it looked just as effective by it all crashing together without programming three hidden balls to do it. So even though I didn’t resolve this problem I was able to have just as effective effect. I will in the future look into this problem and resolve it as I felt I was doing it correctly.

Progression

My progression though this has been very successful. I was able to follow all the requirements and get everything completed on time. It was very difficult as with me starting late in the course I had a lot of work that needed to be caught up on but I'm very happy with my overall work. I feel I have achieved my goals and aims and done a successful job in creating a animated advert in cinema 4d.

Apply Numeracy to achieve a final outcome

Personal Development Plan

The objectives for week 1 are to make sure my idea is in place and know what I want to do to the character, what type of movement it will do extra. Week 2 I will work on the development of of my project and draw out my ideas into a storyboard.Week 3 will be creating a 3D animated clip in cinema 4d and make sure it looks how I've drawn it out and keep the same basic idea instead of making it too hard for myself.

Inspiration Work

I put a lot of research into examples over the previous year entries to give myself a better idea on how to create an E-STING. By looking at examples of style, layout and development it has given me my own ideas how to create my own E-STING and has made me realise which idea I want to do and how it is going to be animated. The visual styles of the animations have inspired and informed my work.

I liked this idea as its basic concept like mine and works so well. This really influenced me to do my own. I believe it follows all the requirements that the client wants and lures you into watching it.

Reflection and Evaluation

Overall I found the project manageable but hard as I have other modules to do as well as this one but I felt that I have managed my time very well so I was able to get on with other assignments; t his helped a lot that I did it in such a quick time. I’ve had a lot more pressure with having more modules to do by I think having the pressure has helped me to do better and made me prepared if I get that amount of work all at one time.

I believe I did achieve my overall aims and objectives as I was set out to do as much hard work as possible. My main aim was to get this completed and working and Im proud as I think it looks really good and my peers and family think so too. Its nice to see Ive done something like this and I can hopefully show everyone else. My animation was fit for purpose as it ticked off the requirements and can be shown live on television any time of the day as with it being a basic jigsaw anyone can watch that.

Module 1 Walking Cycle

Progress and Time Management

Time Plan:

I created a timetable of how long it would take for me to do a drawing. I gave myself 1 week at most and at least 3-4 hours a day to create the assets, artwork, animation, editing, and stylising. I believe this worked efficiently as when I prepared my timetable I made sure I followed it every day, as if I had to hand it in within a week to give me that extra push even though I didn’t.

Document Daily/Weekly Progress:

I felt like I was behind schedule at first as the drawings were taking a while to do, as I changed my mind on my character. I still manage to complete my character on time with all the movements been correctly drawn out so I believe I stayed on target as I wanted to.  I underestimated my work load and next time will give me more time as this lead to not fully being a head of plan.

Uploaded Images

Here shows my walking cycle of my character. As you can see I did a simple walk to show the key movements of the cycle. By changing the leg, arms and hat you can clearly see a movement. This turned out to be a hard module to do as mastering a sequence of a walk is harder than I imagined. I feel as if I was able to get the key movements but next time I want to try something harder such as running and adding colour to the character.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Overall my strengths for the project went really well as I worked through what I was supposed to do, and always looked back on references so I knew exactly what I was doing.  However I did have weaknesses as well as strengths which meant I had to deal with issues such as I found it difficult to get the key movements correct as sometimes when playing my loop the walking cycle didn't look completely correct. In order to get this right, I had to draw out my character movements again, but I finally got it to work properly. I resolved this by looking at Muybridge work and researching online at key movements. With it being hand drawn, I didn't have much time to colour it in Photoshop which is what I would of liked to have done in the future as of course it would look better. But I am impressed I was able to get idea across and was able to prove I can create a character showing movement.  I did however colour and line work one of my images just so I could see what it looked like.

I did overcome my weaknesses and was able to make my work better by knowing I had them. The strengths I had was always making sure I had no weaknesses and if I did I would work on them. I put a lot of effort into this module, and I will keep doing so with other modules. So any weaknesses I still have I will overcome them in over modules as I will always keep practising and improving on my work.

The threats I had en-counted was, that I was found it difficult to get the key movements correct as sometimes when playing my loop the walking cycle didn't look completely correct. This lead to me redrawing some of my hand drawn drawings but I finally got it working properly as I kept researching others work similar to my own. Keeping the same proportions of the body was hard as I could never get it just right, but then realised to make it easier for myself I could trace my own images, and change the movement of the leg and arms at the same time, which helped a whole lot. I felt like I've dealt with my problems very well as I've just kept going at it and trying as hard as I can.

Progression through this module

My progression though this has been very successful. I was able to follow all the requirements and get everything completed on time. It was very difficult as with me starting late in the course I had a lot of work that needed to be caught up on but I'm very happy with my overall work. I feel I have achieved my goals and aims and done a successful character in motion by using very basic tools.

Applying Numeracy to a Project to achieve a final outcome

Keeping the same proportions of the body was hard as I could never get it just right, but then realised to make it easier for myself I could trace my own images, and change the movement of the leg and arms at the same time, which helped a whole lot.  If I had the chance to now however, I would make more changes on my character as there is always room for improvement, but I would make his hands and legs a bit better as his toes and fingers are all different sizes and out of proportions. Its good to always refer to your own hands and feet even if you are drawing a cartoon as when drawing i've been taught if you drawing your hand/feet while watching it its a better outcome than you would get if you were copying someones drawing online.

Personal Development Plan

The objectives for week 1 are to make sure my idea is in place and know what I want to do to the character, what type of movement it will do extra. Week 2 I will work on the development of of my project and draw out my character. I will take time to make the character look as if it is simply walking. Week 3 will be putting it onto dragon software so that you are able to clearly see the movement i have given the character.

Inspirational Work

Eadweard Muybridge influenced my work as he was able to create a series of studies which included human and animal life and movement. From seeing his examples it made me think of my own, so I used the same techniques he did and begin researching into what would be my moving character   He used a plain backdrop to stop unwanted parts from getting in the way of the background; he then photographed in front of the backdrop then observed the process of the movements that were being made.  He would shot these shots several times a second to make the images look like they were in a constant loop of movement but indeed were simple separate images.

Refection and Evaluation

Overall I found the project manageable but hard as I have other modules to do as well as this one but I felt that I have managed my time appropriately and therefore got the work done on schedule. I’ve had a lot more pressure with having more modules to do by I think having the pressure has helped me to do better and made me prepared if I get that amount of work all at one time.

I believe I did achieve my overall aims and objectives as I was set out to do as much hard work as possible. I put a lot of effort into my research so my end project would look as good as it could. My main aim was to make sure my character did a walking cycle and I know for sure I succeeded.  My animation was fit for purpose as I did exactly what the assignment told me to do and made my character do a walking cycle like it would do in a cartoon clip.

Module 2 Storyboard

Progress and Time Management

The animation will start outside with the bear (Rory) lying down. A fly (Buzz) flies past and is sucked in with a breath. Trapped inside the stomach Buzz tries to think of a way out. After a light bulb moment he pulls out some dynamite. He will cover his ears and we will see a view of Rory. An explosion happens, then Rory falls from the sky after explosion as Buzz flies off happily. Rory then crashes into the ground, Buzz flies past, blows a raspberry and then quickly flies off up a tree. Rory starts to climb too, gaining on Buzz who takes a detour from the main trunk along a branch. Rory follows and is just about to grab Buzz when SNAP! Branch falls and Rory ends up in a ditch again.

Strengths and Weaknesses

I had many strengths when doing the storyboard, I was able to think of an idea and research other artists to try and use the methods they did and this worked well. However I did have weaknesses such as when doing my storyboards I found it difficult to decide on what would be the next frame, and was worried I was skipping too far ahead as in my head I know what story I’m trying to tell but that may not be the case when others look at my work.

So in order to stop me from worrying I decided to ask friends and family to look at my work and see if they can interpret the story themselves. It turned out that they did understand it but give me ideas on how to add a couple of extra frames just to make the story perfect as sometime they got a little confused how one frame jumped to the next. This helped me a lot and made my storyboard better.

A threat I had when doing this module was that I couldn’t animate it properly on Photoshop, I had the storyboard in place and the right idea for a story but I don’t think I had enough frames to actually make the key movements when making the storyboard into a movie. I created the storyboard like a comic strip so when putting it together and playing it o the timeline, it doesn’t look right at all. This was a problem in the end, and I wasn’t sure what else to do. I think if I looked into more on the internet I may of got the answer I needed but unfortunately I was never able to resolve this.

Progression

My progression though this has been very successful. I was able to follow all the requirements and get everything completed on time. It was very difficult as with me starting late in the course I had a lot of work that needed to be caught up on but I'm very happy with my overall work. I feel I have achieved my goals and aims and done a successful job in creating a storyboard. I felt it showed what the story is about and seemed a funny idea to do something with a bit of humour.

Apply Numeracy to achieve final outcome

Keeping the same proportions of the body was hard as I could never get it just right, but then realised to make it easier for myself I could trace my own images, and change the movement of the leg and arms at the same time, which helped a whole lot.  If I had the chance to now however, I would make more changes on my character as there is always room for improvement, but I would make his hands and legs a bit better as his toes and fingers are all different sizes and out of proportions. Personal Development Plan

The objectives for week 1 are to make sure my idea is in place and know what I want to do to the character, what type of movement it will do extra. Week 2 I will work on the development of of my project and to draw out my storyboard and make sure it works. Week 3 will be putting it on mounted board and making sure the storyboard is coloured in photoshop.

Inspirational Work

I looked more into her work and grew to love it more, so from there I tried to use the same methods and techniques that she does. She takes one step at a time on each storyboard and like any artist does it all in rough then develops on the idea. I’m going to approach my storyboard the way she always approaches her.

I created a mind map try think of an idea, I knew I want to do a run and chase effect with two characters but it was deciding on what two characters I wanted to do this with. I wanted to do a chase and run effect as to me it seems like that idea has died over the years, cartoons like tm and jerry and Looney tunes don’t seem to have that many viewers what it used to be about. So I have decided to try and bring back the idea and use different characters to create that effect.

Reflection and Evaluation

Overall I found the project manageable but hard as I have other modules to do as well as this one but I felt that I have managed my time appropriately and therefore got the work done on schedule. I would of preferred more time so I was able to animate my storyboad but next time I know to look into tutorials online and get help that I needed. I’ve had a lot more pressure with having more modules to do by I think having the pressure has helped me to do better and made me prepared if I get that amount of work all at one time.

I believe I did achieve my overall aims and objectives as I was set out to do as much hard work as possible. The only unfortunate factor was animating it but everything else was a success. I put a lot of effort into my research so my end project would look as good as it could. My main aim was to make sure my story worked when doing my rough sketches and I feel as if I succeeded in doing so. My animation wasn’t quite fit for purpose as I never got round to completely animating a moving story but I know by looking at it and showing others, they knew what the story board was about. My down fall was knowing how to animate it correctly on Photoshop.
